What is a domain name?
A domain name is an alphanumeric name that people can type into their browsers to reach a specific web site.  There are three parts to most domain names - the www part stands for World Wide Web, which is the giant network of users who agree to use HMTL based documents to communicate with each other.  The middle part is what we normally think of as the domain name. Ours is Coastline.  The last part - from .af to .zw is called the top level domain.

What does the .com mean?
The original domain extensions were .com for commercial, .net for network, .edu for education, .gov for government and .org for organization.  The .com, .org and .net extensions have come into popular use for any web site regardless of content.

How many domains are there?
That number increases daily.  However, as of 1/25/2001 there were 35,158,339 with 21,243,588 being .com alone. (According to NetNames.)

How can I tell if my domain is taken?
You can check here, or you can go to Registrars.com or Networksolutions.com, and see if a domain is available.

How can I find out who owns a domain name?
Go to Registrars.com or NetworkSolutions.com and click on WhoIs.  When you type the domain into the box you will get a listing of who owns the domain, for how long and when it is scheduled to expire.  This an excellent way of making sure your domain information is correct.

Once I purchase a domain name is it mine forever?
No, the domain names are purchased by the year.  Coastline signs new accounts up with Registrars.com for one year.

Where does Coastline purchase their domains?
Registrars.com

How much does it cost to register a domain name?
Our registrar wholesaler charges less than $9 for one year.  Coastline doesn't charge any fees to purchase the domain names for its clients.

For how many years do I own my domain?
Coastline signs up all domains for one year initially.

How can I renew my domain name?
Once Registrars.com sends you the confirmation of your domain name order, you can go to their website, log in with your username and password.  You will then be given a list of options for how many more years you want to renew the name.

Back

Can one domain name forward automatically to another domain name?
When one domain name automatically jumps to another domain that is called an alias.  Coastline offers aliases for $10/month.

How do I change the name of my domain once my account has been set up?
You will need to close the old account and open a new one.  If you need to keep the same website, download a copy from the server before closing the old site as you will need to upload the files to the new site.

What is a subdomain and does Coastline offer them?
A subdomain is shown as my.domain.com, where domain.com is the primary domain.  The subdomain may or may not be located on the same computer as the primary domain.  Coastline does not offer subdomains.

Does Coastline park domains?
No, we don't park domains.

What happens to my domain name if I close my Coastline account?
When you close your account with Coastline, we remove your records from our DNS server.  Unless you go to the registrar that sold you your account, the domain name will continue to point to our servers but visitors will just get a 404 error saying the page could not be found.
